Eyeglass Lenses

Eyeglass lenses are available in numerous materials. The most common material is plastic otherwise known as CR-39. Polycarbonate is a type of plastic that allows for UV protection, is lighter in weight and reduces the danger of breakage. Hi index materials will reduce the thickness of lenses and make for a more cosmetically pleasing appearance. Glass lenses are available also but the heaver weight compared to plastics, polycarbonate or the higher index material is one of the disadvantages.

Coatings can be placed on lenses to allow for more durability and reduced glare. Typically scratch coatings are placed on lenses to reduce the amount of scratches from cleaning but nothing is truly scratch proof. Anti reflective coating will reduce glare and they are available in all different qualities. Transition lenses are lenses that turn light to dark with ultraviolet light; although they are great for outdoors, they will not act as true sunglass in your car because the windshield in newer cars have ultraviolet light protection. Polarized lenses are an excellent option for sunglasses and they are available in all lens types.
